Formula BMW Pacific 2010 champion Richard Bradley looks to a season in F3 next

Singapore, 26 November 2010 – Having sealed the championship at the previous race meeting in Japan, 2010 Formula BMW Pacific champion and top rookie Richard Bradley had an eventful season finale at the 57th Macau Grand Prix. Eventually wrapping up the series with 76 points ahead of the next driver, the 19-year-old sole Singaporean representative achieved the biggest winning margin ever as well as dominated the season with the most number of outright race wins (including guest drivers) in the history of Formula BMW Pacific.

Reputed as one of the most challenging street circuits in the world, the Guia Circuit in Macau indeed provided extremely exciting racing with incidents aplenty – including Bradley’s unfortunate accident at the infamous Lisboa bend on the first lap which ruined his chances of winning the race.

Qualifying on the tight Guia track was interrupted by numerous red flags and ended abruptly just as Bradley was pushing on a lap that looked good for pole. Having to settle for third on the starting grid, he was battling for second place on the first lap when he missed his braking point at the Turn 3 and mounted the rear of another driver.

After a necessary pit stop for a nose replacement and tyre change, followed by a drive-through penalty for the earlier incident, Bradley rejoined the race at the back. Working hard through the 27-strong field, he managed to overtake many on the narrow circuit and finished in 17th.

Nonetheless, the invaluable experience and knowledge gained over the weekend will prove beneficial for his career, as he looks to advance to Formula 3 next.

“This has been an unbelievable season. It is my rookie year in formula car racing and scoring maximum championship points for eight out of 15 races was just incredible. The greatest moment was winning the championship before the end of the season in Japan,” said a happy Bradley.

He added, “I would like to thank all who have believed in me – my family and friends, my team Eurasia Motorsport and my mechanics, and my sponsors HKS Garage R, 9tro and AXA. Now I can’t wait for next year!”

2010 Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel and other F1 drivers like Nico Rosberg, Nico Hulkenberg, Adrian Sutil, Timo Glock, Sebastien Buemi and Bruno Senna were all former Formula BMW champions in their younger days. While Hulkenburg won the title in 2005 by only five points ahead of Sebastien Buemi in second place, Vettel was only second in his rookie year of Formula BMW in 2003.

Formula BMW Pacific 2010, Rounds 7 – 10

Singapore, 3 September 2010 – After a well-rested four-month break, Drivers’ Championship and Rookie Cup leader Richard Bradley of Singapore is ready to resume the title race at the 2010 Formula BMW Pacific championship. Following six of 15 rounds of the series, the 19-year-old Eurasia Motorsport driver enters this weekend with a 34-point lead over his closest contender for the overall title. Held at the Guangdong International Circuit in China, Rounds 7 to 10 will take place as part of the Hong Kong Autosport Challenge.

“I’ve been looking forward to this weekend as I’m excited to get back behind the wheel and race. The rest of the season will be very fast-paced as the remaining nine rounds take place over the next three months. I’ve had some days of testing during the break and I’m all geared up to put in my best performance and maintain the lead,” said Bradley.

During the break, the former multiple British kart racing champion made a return at the opening round of the Asian Open Karting Championship (AKOC) in June to keep fit and enhance his race craft. Since he last raced in karts last November at the WSK International Series (Super KF category), Bradley has not karted competitively. Still, that did not stop him from clinching pole position before going on to win all three heats, the pre-final as well as the final at the Formula 125 Senior class of AKOC.

In addition, Bradley was selected as the ambassador for F1 in Schools in Singapore, where he advocates the importance of technical and engineering knowledge in motorsports.

Bradley made a spectacular debut in his rookie single-seater season at the opening rounds of the Championship which were held as support races to the Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix. Clinching back-to-back victories, Richard qualified in pole position and set the fastest lap times for both races. His pole position time was a new record in a Formula BMW at Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia.

Come September, Bradley will be racing across the streets of Singapore at Marina Bay when the Series visits our sunny island as a support race to the Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.
